12 month old waking at night

My 12 month old needs us to stay in the room while he falls asleep in the crib, must have his pacifier or he will scream the whole time and will wake up at least twice a night 12am and 2am for comfort or to play. We eliminated his night time feedings months ago so I know he is not hungry. He just has trouble staying asleep. Any advice? How old was your little one when he could sleep at least an 8 hour stretch every night?

The self soothing is hard for babies and moms alike. My son slept through the night at around 9 months. He still wakes from time to tile when he is having developmental leaps or teething and I have to go get him. We also set a strict schedule about bed time and do the same routine every single night so he knows it’s time to sleep.

My son slept through the night, most nights around 4 months. We rocked him to sleep until about 8 months. Then, we Ferberized him. It was hard as hell for about three nights, but once he learned to self soothe it was so much better. Now, he’s three and has no trouble sleeping. He wakes up maybe once every three months or so.

And I second what Jennifer said. Having a routine helps signal that it is time to sleep and it helps when their older.

My son was mostly sleeping through the night by 4-5 months. We did rock to sleep for the first year, and have been transitioning away from that for the past 6 months or so (he just turned 2). Most nights he can put himself to sleep with his pacifier and little stuffed animal. We will be ditching the pacifier after our upcoming vacation. I agree that routine is really key! The only time we have sleep issues is when bed times and routines get messed up, which happens on occasion (life is messy!) If we stick to a 7:30ish bedtime he’s MUCH more likely to just sleep on through to morning without a peep. Good luck.
