3 y/o still adjusting to school

My youngest 2 kids have been attending a small private school since they were 2y/o my little girl started and loved it from beginning even till now. Now my son has been there a year now going on two and he stills whines and cry when we drop them off but is A-ok after a while of us leaving comes home ready to do homework and all, my question is what could it be is it just separation anxiety kind of thing?

I took my daughter to Headstart when she was three and she was the same exact way. She’d cry so much the teacher would pull her off of me sometimes. She continued to do that til almost the spring semester. When I asked one of the teachers for advice they recommended a book called “mommy always comes back” I would read that to her almost every day until she finally felt comfortable saying goodbye. There is also another book Called “Bye bye time” that one helped too. The teacher also told me that the longer I would stay, she would cry even more. I knew once I was out the door she’d cry for a bit then same as yours she’d be doing what she was suppose to and such.
