Baby has anal fissures/irritation

E

My baby recently got diarrhea and now she has redness and rawness on her bum. It hurts when we change her diaper and I usually just wash her bum on the sink because it seems like the baby wipes (Kirkland brand) would hurt more. I’m starting to really apply a large amount of Desitin on her bum hoping it would help soothe her as well as have diaper free time as much as we can. Any advice on how to help my baby? Hearing her cry in pain is really making me sad 😞

A&D works best for sores like that, desitin is for rashes and could be causing more irritation to the broken skin.

Anal fissures are no joke. Bring that baby to her doctor asap. If severe, it may need a stitch. If less severe, at least some kind of Rx suppository. You can give her baby Tylenol and baby Motrin for the pain. Aloe with lidocaine on tbe site will give her really good relief. In the meantime, use witchhazel as an astringent to sanitize it (you don't want it to get infected). Also, try to keep her off her bum. As above commenter said, Desitin is for rash.

What would be the best way to change her after she poos her diaper? I feel like wiping is too irritating for her bum

Witch hazel wipes (CVS and grocery stores will have them in the hemorrhoid aisle). Also a warm bath.

I would go to the doctor and get an Rx cream especially depending on how bad it is but if not treated right is only going to get worse.

Babo unscented healing ointment is amazing for chapped and open skin like this.

We use Medline dry wipes (you can order them on Amazon) with just warm water for bad diaper rash. This sounds nuts but we’d use a hair dryer on the cold setting to dry her out after each change and then diaper cream with vasoline on top - it’s a nurse’s trick our dr told us about after our daughter had a few bad rashes. Good luck!

How do you know she has a fissure!?! I’m so worried about something like this happening with my daughter because she’s frequently constipated and I am an over worried by nature. I really like triple paste. I have tried lots of different creams but triple paste seems to work best for us but that’s just for diaper rashes. Good luck!!

I noticed she doesn’t show much discomfort after I blow dry her bum after a sitz bath. Then I apply a good amount of Aquaphor and she doesn’t wince

I remember using triple paste before and it worked well. Maybe I’ll just buy it again

My son would get diaper rash with the Kirkland brand. We switched to Water Wipes and it helped.

Don’t use baby wipes. Use Medline dry wipes. Wet them with warm water and use them instead. They are super soft. Triple paste is great for the healing and aquaphor is good to keep the skin protected and soft after it heals. My doctor had also recommended not wiping for every diaper change when we had a diaper rash. Only wipe if it’s poop. It it’s a wet diaper only and there is still diaper cream, just change the diaper. The less wiping the better during this time. Hope it’s better soon!

I never wipe with anything when there’s irritation or pain. I use a squeeze or spray bottle of water to cleanse and let air dry and lots of naked time. If there’s a need for a diaper, Use the appropriate cream.
