Breastmilk - Formula Transition Help!!

My 11 month old has been EBF until now. I’ve had some work transitions and haven’t been able to keep up my supply. This week, we will need to start supplementing with formula (I confirmed with his pediatrician who doesn’t want us to go whole milk until we actually hit 1 year mark). So we thought we’d take the opportunity to start him on it over the weekend to make sure that he liked. We did the standard Enfamil (yellow container), and he seemed to take it just fine. Well, about an hour ago, approximately 6 hours after his first formula bottle and during an attempt to give him his 3rd for the day, he started projectile vomiting. It happened 3 times and he’s now passed out in my arms, waking every 10-15 minutes in apparent pain. I have no reason to believe that it’s anything but the formula - no fever, no other sickness going on. Has anyone else experienced this? What’s the best way to transition an EBF baby to formula at this late stage? Any specific formula that anyone has tried for this kind of transition? I’m at a loss and worried because I don’t have enough breastmilk to get us through this week much less the next 4... help please!

Try cutting the milk with ‘for supplementation’ (green) enfamil? Then slowly transition to all formula? You can also try giving probiotics.. I liked the Gerber soothe drops.

That sounds scary!! We started supplementing at 10 months after EBF. We started pretty slow. A couple ounces here and there and then more as needed. Other than a little gas I didn’t notice any other issues. We used Honest formula. I was noticing a lot of the other formula’s first ingredient was high fructose corn syrup and felt like that would probably be rough on a kiddo that had only eaten breast milk and other fruits, veggies and simple meats. Honest is a little costly but since it’s such a short time that you’re using it, it may be worth a shot.

I know your Dr said not to switch cold turkey to cow milk, but with my son he did just fine switching an ounce or 2 at a time over the 11th month to 1 year Mark. Personally I have breastfed through bottle and had run out of my milk by the time he was 10 months old so I slowly transitioned to formula but was annoyed that he stopped learning so I moved him to milk a month early with no complete cow milk bottles till 1 year old. You have to do what you feel is right for your kid. Good luck, but I think try to transition a bit slower to whatever you decide

I was giving my son breast milk on a bottle until he was about 7-8 months when my supply want enough so I started batch preparing his bottles. I used the big gallon Pyrex to mix all the BM and I'd add about 8-10 ounces of formula to the batch. As my supply got lower is add more formula. He's now 11 months and our doctor said that same thing. After 1 yr to switch him to cow milk. My son is right now drinking almost all formula and now I'm going to do the same thing but with the formula and whole milk. I used Earth's Best formula and then started getting HIPP Organic. He can't tell the difference between my milk and the formula. When he was born the hospital had asked me to add formula to my milk to add calories cause he was 7 weeks early. It was Similac and it gave him gas and made him fussy... So instead of one bottle with the formula of just dilute it into all his bottles. Sorry this is happening to you and I hope he gets better.

Thanks everyone. He finally calmed down after about 3 hours and seemed like his normal happy self again. I think we’ll try taking things a little slower going forward and maybe try mixing breastmilk and the formula and see how he does.
