Child interest in scary movies

Anonymous

We struggle with our 5 year old who is currently interested in scary movies. He has split homes and the knowledge of it has come from the opposite home. Often, different characters come out at different times and has taken his father and I by shock. He has mentioned Pennywise, Michael Myers, Jason, Freddy, etc. At our house, we do not allow scary videos, movies or figures. It all started about a year ago and we had suffered with bad dreams which we bought a dream catcher and seemed to help a little. But as he has gotten older he seems to talk about it more this last time he came back to our house it seems to be all he has talked about. At times, I feel I should just let it happen it seems to be his interest and talking to the other home would not do any good, but I worry for his future and what having an interest at such a young age could reflect.

I think it’s okay. Kids that age sometimes talk a LOT about really morbid things, but I see this as more healthy curiosity than anything else. He is probably trying to process and understand what he has seen, so I would try to talk about it openly and continually reinforce that monsters in movies are not real and no one is actually being hurt. It would be ideal if he didn’t see these things at the other home, but I think at 5 they are mature enough to talk it over and understand the basic idea that it is just entertainment and not something that happens in real life.

Thank you. We do tell him that scary people are fake and that we are not supposed to do those things in real life. Your comment though makes me feel better. Was really worried about him having this interest so young what would become of it

My son is almost 4 and he loves tomb raider and any movie that has guns and fighting. Why? Because it’s so cool! - his words! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Guns is one thing he has tons of toy guns and his father is a huge hunter so he knows the respect and safety of them but when he’s walking around talking about Michael Myers and humming the Halloween song and penny wise and Jason come up out of nowhere I was a bit concerned

You should find him age appropriate spooky shows or movies for him to watch like zombie hotel, grizzly tales for gruesome kids, Mona the vampire, young Dracula, bunnicula, count duckula and maybe let him watch monster house, coraline, paranorman, the corpse bride, hotel Transylvania, scooby doo and the witches ghost etc

Some of those he will watch but some he says are too scary! Which I don’t understand! He will say that but then he will talk about penny wise! And just hearing that name gives me the chills!

This post made me giggle a little because my 4 year old is the same. When he comes back from being with his dad hes just a little different in the way he acts or says things. He had a thing with chuckie that little Killer doll? And I would just explain that its fake and thats all i had to talk to his dad about keeping it rated g. He really like scary stuff its so weird !
