Eating question!

How can I get my son to pick up his food and actually put it into his mouth??? He’ll do it with a spoon, and I know he’s capable of eating things that can be grasped (I’ve given him hard boiled egg, small pieces of pasta, banana, boiled veggies, typical BLW things) but they only make it to his mouth because I eventually feed them to him. Should I get the baby puffs since they’re accommodating to baby’s hands?

Follow up question: I still feed him purées so he gets more food in, is this hindering his advancement in this skill or should I keep doing that?

Just time :) just let him play and experiment and he’ll figure it out! Maybe try and be dramatic and say watch how mom does it!!!!!! And pick it up all obnoxious and put it in your mouth acting like it was the coolest thing ever! If baby isn’t interested in copying you just yet, he will be soon! In my opinion, it isnt about getting food in at this age. Baby should get 99% of food source from formula/bm, food before one is really just to practice and experiment and learn :) I’d say if you’ve been doing purees for a few months to move onto soft solids and build from there! There’s no right and no wrong, if you feel like sticking to purees for a little while longer then you should do that! He won’t be eating baby food from a spoon at 10, I swear 😉

Agree w/ Kendall! It just takes time! And just when you think they got it, they do something really random that will leave you scratching your head! For example, my 17 month old has been great at feeding herself for months and is pretty good with utensils too...then starting last Friday she decided it would be hilarious to try putting food in the palm of her hand and attempting to “bat” it into her mouth. No idea. None. I grilled my husband and he swears he didn’t teach her to do that. We rarely have TV on. Soooo why. Why. Why. Is she doing this now!?! But she keeps growing and seems happy so I’m starting to learn to shrug these things off! Lol.

Thanks ladies! I hate feeling like I’m doing something wrong or not doing enough... but I guess that’s parenthood 😂🤷🏼‍♀️

my son was confused because i would tell him not to put things in his mouth but i wanted him to feed himself. contradiction!! so i had to explain to him that he could put things that mama said he could. took about a week but he got it. very nervous initially but now he feeds himself by hand
