From formula to milk

My son is about to be a year old in a couple weeks and I’m freaking out about the transition from formula to cows milk. I’ve already tried introducing him to some dairy products like cheese, yogurt and other foods that might have dairy in it. He hasn’t had a problem until recently I gave him American cheese, he pooped 5 times in one day causing him a diaper rash. Is he possibly allergic to cows milk? How do I transition him to regular cows milk? Is he possibly going to get sick or get another diaper rash? Help, I’m worried with his family history being that his uncle was allergic to dairy as a toddler and me being lactose intolerant.

I wouldn’t jump the gun thaaaaat quick and assume a string cheese means he has an allergy. I’d watch closely the next time :) is he on soy formula? Most formula is milk based, if so then I’d assume he’ll be ok with the tradition. As far as the transition once he was close to one I started adding in milk to his formula so I’d only make a 7 oz bottle and the last oz I’d do milk. A few days later I’d make a 6oz bottle and do the last 2 oz of milk. Etc etc until we were at a full bottle of milk! My son over all doesn’t really care for milk, so now (he’s 2) I only give him milk at meals and he’ll usually drink it all, probably a few ounces. But other than that just water. I give plenty of cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese etc so he’s fine! Yeah As far as the allergy, yeah that seems like it’s a real concern in your family.... I’d say just watch him closely as you start the transition, I think at first regardless his poop might be different but he could also adjust. If you feel it’s upsetting his bowels and belly then I’d just talk to the doctor! Plenty of kids drink plant based or nut based milk and are totally fine. I know my niece is 2 and drinks toddler formula still bc of the same reason. Doctor says it’s got more nutrients than regular milk anyways.

Talk to your doctor, if you have a family history your pediatrician needs to know. You wouldn't just give him peanuts to try if you had an allergy, would you? Just wait until his 1 year appointment and let the doctor guide you through the transition

I would make my boys baby cereal with regular cows milk before introducing just straight cows milk.
