Hi. I have a 19 month old daughter that eats on her own and makes a huge mess, but doesn’t use a spoon for nothing in the world. Any suggestions on how I can teach her not to eat everything with her hands and use a spoon ?
I have a messy child an honestly I don't think I've seen one that doesn't make a mess yet... But anyways I just put my baby in the hi chair give her a spoon an let her figure it out while I'm eating as well. Then as I'm using the spoon i tell her come on you do it. Scoop it ( while doing the hand motions) or forks i say you gotta poke it ( but I have child safe forks ) an eventually she got it... She still makes messes but it's cool to watch them learn! Just give it time they'll figure it out 😉
We started with a fork and she would eat raviolis and stuff like that with it, bc forks are kinda easier to learn. Then I gave her thick oatmeal to practice eating with a spoon, that way it didn’t get everywhere. We did that for a couple weeks and last night she ate a whole bowl of spaghettios with a spoon! Still made a mess but everything is a learning process. Also, accept the messes lol toddlers are just messy creatures!
They will eventually figure it out! What I find helpful is I put old newspapers under his high chair to catch the mess and I let him wear an apron as a bib and everything ends up Either on the apron or news papers and it makes clean up so much easier and faster
Eat in front of her and put the spoon next to her when she it’s. That’s it. When she’s ready, she’ll do it.
It's annoying but normal! Continue to offer foods that need utensils but don't force it. Model using utensils in front of her as much as you can and whenever you can. You can also shake it up, offer her food and place the fork and/or spoon out of reach but in her sight line, she'll start grabbing for or asking for them. Again, it's normal. She's in a discovering phase and while may be frustrating for you it's necessary for her. Good luck Momma!
We also used to use old bed sheets under the highchair on the floor at home. Scoop it up, toss the mess, and wash the sheet. They'll be ruined but but your floor won't be. Burlington had the coolest disposable floor mess mats for when we went out to restaurants. Parenting hacks!!!
