How do I get toddler to brush teeth

I've been trying to get my 21 month old to brush his teeth. I'll give him his toothbrush to see what he does with it and every time hes just chews on the bristles for like 5 seconds then starts to brush other things with it other then his teeth. So then I end up forcing him to brush his teeth for him but he fights me every time and clenches his teeth to avoid opening his mouth. Is there any tips or tricks out there that I could use to get him to brush his teeth or should I just wait it out?

With our 2 kids, we have them do their brushing first (which is really just chewing), but it’s a rule that mommy or daddy “finish” when they’re done.

We started teeth brushing around 12 months and it started out as just chewing on the toothbrush. He’s 23 months now. He loves mimicking us so anytime we brush our teeth we will dance and sing just to make it fun and he absolutely loves it. He will beg to get his teeth brushed. Sesame Street has a teeth brushing song that he will watch over and over!

With my toddlers, I sing them a song from baby first tv. At the end I'll even throw in "and you gotta brush your tongue" And after singing it 1-2x, I'll brush them one last time and sing the song as I do.

I take his toothbrush and fake brushing my teeth while smiling and singing like it’s so much fun then he wants me to do it to him lol

I started the routine of brushing probably around 10 months. I give him his toothbrush with the paste and let him play with it in his mouth how he desires and every few seconds I say mommy’s turn and I use the finger brush to brush a bit all over then let him do it again and back and forth. Every so often he fights it but I just let it go and don’t fight that time. I sing to him while we brush too. I also hold him while I brush my own teeth which he finds fascinatingly hilarious so I imagine that helps too. It’s just gotta become part of fun routine and I’m not opposed to bribing if that all doesn’t work lol. He is 15 months now and we’ve been pretty consistent with morning and evening so far.

Thank you so much for your feedback Nikki! Uughh i think that's the problem is because i didn't start him early maybe? And yea I'll definitely try all your great ideas. I've started a routine now but i think maybe because he's not used to it that's why its all strange to him and he doesnt want to do it?

Yeah, it’s always hard to start a new routine, but the key is consistency. Also, you can give him a toothbrush (sans toothpaste) and ask him to clean a dolls teeth too, role play. Keep at it lady, it will become the norm soon enough!

Thanks for your feedbacks ladies! I'm definitely going to try incorporating a song in there. Hopefully it'll change things for us. :)

I brush my teeth teeth with my toddler so that he knows it's not just him who has to brush his teeth but also mommy and daddy and everyone else has to do it to and it makes less of a fight

I started brushing my sons teeth as soon as they started coming in. He’s 20 months now and has does it (kinda) by himself. Have him watch when you guys do it so he understands what he’s supposed to be doing. There’s tooth brushing apps that are fun and stuff too.

My son is 2 and we started him on morning and night brushes at 1. He was awesome at it off and on, you will have good days and bad days just make sure you’re consistent! We sing the Raffi “brush your teeth” song. :)

When my son is frustrated or not interested in teeth brushing I get him to brush my teeth while I brush his and so far it works every time.

I started by taking her with me and letting her watvh me brush my teeth. Monkey see monkey do. Now she turns into emily rose and has a meltdown if i dont give her her toothbrush. Also, try to make a game out of it. Make funny faces while brushing your teeth! Try to make it a fun ordeal :)
