How do I know when I should go to the doctor for a cold?

Anonymous

My 5 month old has had a cold for almost a week now. He’s miserable. He’s been coughing a lot and has mucus running out of every orifice of his body. When should I be concerned enough to go to the doc?

Does he have a fever? Our policy is that if the fever doesn’t break in a couple of days then we usually go in to the doctor. Tylenol to keep it down in the mean time.

Call your doc and ask! Most will have a nurse advice line and let you know when they think symptoms warrant being seen. I use that number regularly!

Same happened to my son! She said how ever long a cold lasts for you to double it for a baby. So she said typically 10-14 days to be over a cold bc as adults we can blow our noses, cough it up, etc. and babies cannot. She always told us as long as it doesn’t sound like it’s in his lungs (wheezing) then just let it be. There’s no real meds for babies like there is for adults so just do your best to suck booger’s out, use a humidifier, use baby Vick’s on their feet/chest.
