How much homework does your grade schooler do? My 1st grader does 2 hours of homework a night!!

I think it’s too long for a 6 year old who is in school for 8 hours!

Where is the time to play and be just a kid?

They have no time! They are trying to stress us parents out in my community

I think that’s an excessive amount of homework if you ask me. My first grader gets a daily sheet of math homework with 3-4 math problems where she has to show her work and she’s supposed to read for 10 mins each night.

Jenni, see! This is crazy! I believe my daughter she only do that. She is at school for 8 hours having to sit and listening then come home to work

Are your children in private, public or charter?

Nandi, I feel for you and your daughter. We barely can fit in what our daughter has assigned each night. Our daughter is in a quality public school that we’re happy with. Can you talk with the teacher to question the amount of homework?

If it’s public school, you can write the teacher a note saying that you won’t be partaking in homework. Then print off all the studies that say it’s detrimental to student’s health and education etc. if it’s private school then you’re onto plums. They’ll likely ask you to leave.

My stepdaughter is in 5th grade. Last year she had so much hw. It would take hours to finish, and she would end up frustrated and in tears when she couldn’t figure something out and I spent so much time trying to help her with it. At the beginning of this year, I went to a parent teacher orientation where the teachers said that if your child doesn’t understand something - don’t try to teach it to them! They actually said to have the child bring the unfinished hw back to school and tell the teacher they couldn’t figure it out. They will still receive full participation points. The teacher wanted to know if they needed to go over the lesson again. They said not to let your child spend more than 20 minutes (per subject) on hw. I have no idea if the expectations were the same last year, but this has taken so much pressure off. I would suggest talking to teachers about it!

Nandi, I think charter school should be the same as public. Double check though

Good question, my7yr old son in 2nd grade also takes 2 hours to do homework. He gets homework packets every week. He has to do 2 pages of Language arts, 2 pages of math. This is too easy for him which is always done in after school program since I pick him up at 6pm everyday. Then he goes home to do 20 min reading However, he has problem reading. He just doesn't like to read. My requirement for him when reading, is to tell me the Title, Beginning, Middle, Ending of story. Who the characters are, and where is the setting, like at a farm, picnic, home, etc. I don't think that's too hard as the teacher wants the kids to know at his level. But my sons 20 min of reading is more like staring at the book. He's not actually taking in on what he is reading, resulting in 2 hours of reading.

@savi how can you just write a note and say you won’t be partaking in homework? Won’t it still count against their grades? I would love to do that but my children’s grades will drop since homework is a big portion of it. My 2nd and 4th grader receive hours worth of homework every night it’s ridiculous

Last year our kindergartner had at least 2 hrs of hw nightly! The teacher was crazy. Anyone that complained, their child felt the consequences. Our boy was a happy enthusiastic kid until he attended her class. Kindergarten is supposed to be when kids learn to love school, not hate it.

Savvi, no charter schools are able to make their own rules
