Totally normal until 16 weeks old. Look into the fourth trimester. Start by putting baby down on a flat blanket that smells like you.

I also had some luck “preheating” the crib by laying a heating pad on it for a little while before I tried to place baby down. Just remove the heating pad before you put baby down! Some people also have luck with putting the baby on their side in the crib and gently patting their butt until til they fall back to sleep then turning them back on their back. Good luck, transfers are hard but worth figuring out something that works for your sanity and baby’s safety!

Can he/she pick up and move their head by themselves? If so, and people will probably hate this answer, let your baby go to sleep on his tummy. Both my boys were like this and after a couple months of holding them all night, I just let them sleep on their tummies like they wanted. They could push themselves up and pick up their heads very early so I didn't worry about them falling asleep on their face. My 7m old has been sleeping through the night since 3m. (I did borrow an owlet from a friend just for an added peace of mind and protection.)

I also had this issue with my son. The first month didn't bother me I actually loved that he wanted to sleep on my chest. I began to break the habit once he was 8 weeks, it was a slow transition but this is how I did it... First I allowed him to sleep on his tummy because he will not still to this day sleep on his back and I know there are moms out there that will not like this as someone else stated above but my son is 4 months almost 5 and does just fine on his tummy. He turns his head to the side hes been able to hold his head up and support himself since he was a month old and we have never had a scares at all. I began with nap time and just started with a goal of getting thru one nap a day with him not sleeping on my chest so I would let him fall asleep then lay him down on either our bed or the couch next to me on his blanket and i would sit next to him so he could still feel that I was there. Once we had 2 days of one successful nap I then moved to every nap time. As far a night time went I did the same routine and within a week he was sleeping by himself. Hope this helps!
