Nail Biting!

My three-year-old step-kid has started biting her nails pretty consistently. This is terrifying for me as I’ve struggled with nail biting my whole life and still can’t kick the nasty habit. Any advice on helping her stop while she’s young?

Ohmigod I love biting my nails!!! Lol. Nothing has ever gotten me to stop even though my mother tried keeping them cut short, nasty tasting nail polish, letting me chew gum instead, soaking fingers in hot sauce, getting manicures, teaching me to crochet to keep my hands busy, etc...

I’ve tried all those as well, but no luck! LOL.

My daughter has done this too. I know she has seen me do it and I also know that it's a symptom of a bigger problem (anxiety or restlessness, or self harm in my case) I have begun a new ritual of using cuticle cream when I want to pick or bite my nails. It's a positive replacement instead of just telling myself to stop a negative behavior. I've also talked with my daughter about taking care of our bodies and how that includes not hurting our fingers! We keep each other accountable now. Hope that helps!

There’s some nail polish I believe you can put on their nails that helps them stop biting them. My niece does it bad, and I told her she may as well chew on my Bullmastiffs paw, and I haven’t had her bug her nails since.... something about the idea of chewing on a doggie paw was kinda yucky!!

I took my 4 year old to get a mani and pedi with me. She loved it. But now she's only allowed mani/pedis if her nails look pretty. She still bites them sometimes but when I see that she has a couple of pretty nails I compliment them and I think that has helped her want to grow her nails a little. I tried a bitter polish once and that didn't work.

I was bribed. And it worked:-). My dad was a pediatrician and mom a doc too, so it wasn’t like they knew anything. They knew I loved Breyer Horses, and they used it to their advantage.

I’ve noticed my daughter does when she sees her father so it. So I guess if the father stops then she will. She has never done it before until she saw her dad do it.😅 So waiting for him to stop the habit.😅

My 3 year old does this too and gets it from me (maybe his mom too...I don't remember). The problem here is that he's really anxious and will bite them until they're sore and bleeding. We have him in therapy, so maybe that can help.
