Name change

Has anyone changed their child’s name? How long was the process? Do you have to do it in the state they were born, or just where you live currently?

I've changed my own name (after I got married). I found this site useful https://www.missnowmrs.com/ I imagine a lot of the steps would be the same/similar for a child.

Are you talking about changing their first or last name? You would do it in the state of residence. It’s not the same as an adult changing their marital name. You have to file a petition and see a judge. If it’s related to adoption or divorce, it will probably be more complicated.

Vicki- just want to add a suffix to his name. I named him the exact same name as his dad (🤦🏽‍♀️) and it’s already proving to be a problem lol I was just going to add lll after his name...

That sounds like it should be simple. I would contact your local SSN office to start.

There should be a form on your local courthouse website. In our county you also have to post a “public notice“ in the newspaper. It’s not hard. Basically if you can fill out your child’s day care paperwork or fill out your pediatrician paperwork, you can do it. About the time, once you fill out the paperwork you will get an appointment for a name change at the courthouse. I guess how long would depend on your courthouse. The time for the paperwork is way less than the time needed to fill out all the pediatrician or day care paperwork.
