Potty blues

Anonymous

We started potty training (24 month old) last weekend and it was going pretty well! He’d pee in the potty if we asked and even went a few times on his own. Today (day 7) he woke up and COMPLETELY refused to even sit on the potty. Held his pee for 4 hours before it all came pouring out. And did the same another 4 hours later..... we did the “oh crap” method and I am so disappointed with how today went. He was pacing, and crying, and whining, and letting tinkles out with every step but would NOT sit to pee..... I don’t want to give up after a week of hard work, but I feel so bad for him :( help?

Do not give up. From my experience (trained three kids so far, between 18-20 months old), at those young ages they just kinda have cycles. They need repetition to remember how uncomfortable it is to have wet pants and how proud they feel when they get to the potty. It’s gonna come with good days and bad days. But do not stop. You are closer then you realize. Just keep being patient, reminding him of where it goes, and at that age he needs to be brought to the potty often. He will not remember. Life is was too exiting. Hang in there!

Also, there is the option of letting him stand. He’s gonna figure it out anyway on his own.

Keep going. We went through about 3-4 weeks with my daughter crying and sobbing about trying the potty after months of success. Then she went through at least 3 weeks where she was afraid of having accidents and wanted to just sit on the potty constantly. I just kept going...and for the last few months she’s been great. I think it’s just something that they have to work through. No matter what, just stay calm and don’t get too upset. Good luck.
