PreK2 versus Daycare

Hi all! We have the opportunity to put our son in a PreK2 class which has a set curriculum and classroom setting but we also have a fantastic daycare which he is in now that learns through play using the Reggio Emilia approach. My son has a speech delay so we thought the classroom setting might help him but in your opinion what approach has worked best for you? Play or classroom for age 2? Thank you!

I say play at 2. You can always PreK at 3

I'd definitely say play. I think at age 2 it is more important for children to learn social-emotional skills than academic. They have their whole lives once they get to school to learn academics in a classroom setting. At 2, they should be learning through play, interacting, and experiences. I feel that the push to put kids in academic settings too early has led to a generation of children that don't know how to share, interact with others, or put any value in interpersonal relationships.

I have an education background AND a 2.5 year old son with a speech delay. Play, play, play.

Keep him where he’s comfortable, a place you know you love, and a place you know he’s thriving :) there’s plentyyyyyyyy of time for school in the future..... toddlers need to play!

I would definitely say play! At age 2 he can still learn so much just by playing! He might shut down being forced to learn too fast in PreK

Play, play, play!!! We spend so much of our lives not playing, what’s one more year!? I vote let him play! 😃💕

Stick with Reggio Emilia. Academics for toddlers and preschoolers are overestimated. Kids learn through play best. And current research shows that kids who come from academic preschools are ahead until they start burning out around 3rd grade and peers who played catch up academically by then. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/articles/teaching-content/what-happened-kindergarten/

Just an update: we signed my son up for his daycare for the next academic year. Thank you ladies for the advice! :) He definitely needs more time to play.
