Pros and cons of birth control shot

I really don’t know where else to post this (I looked at forum options and didn’t see anything related to this, so it’s out in the open, sorry, haha). Do any of you mamas use Depo Provera for birth control? I used it for 3 months right after I gave birth (over a year ago), and I had a rough time using it. I thought maybe it was because my hormones were still out of whack and my body was still recovering from everything. It’s been a year since I had my kid and I’ve decided to get back on birth control (literally just had to wrestle him for a bathbomb he tried to a bite out of LOL, please don’t judge). It’s also been almost a year since I’ve had the shot. Does it make your periods worse or better? Have you gained any weight or lost weight? Any changes in acne or hair? I know everyone’s body is different and we get different results. I’m just looking for some pros and cons to make my decision. I tried to google this but it seemed so impersonal and medical, I’d rather talk to real ladies about it, haha. Thank you so much!!!

I’ve been on the depo two different times in my life. Before kids, and just after having my first. Both times I did gain weight, and it made my period like an everyday thing. Rather than having my period once a month, I bled everyday. Just a little more than a panty liner, so I couldn’t do it. I didn’t notice any acne or hair changes.

So I dunno if you are set on the depo shot, but I have the implant and I have experienced no weight gain and have no periods. Now I will say that my hormones were a bit out of whack after I got it, but I also got it at my 6 week checkup after having my daughter...so I’m sure my hormones were already out of whack! Lol I have been on the shot before as well and had a little weight gain from it with spotty periods. It’s a matter of which is best for you, but the implant has worked much better for me. Just thought I would share my experience. 😁

I gained 40 lbs in 1 year from the shot. I use Mirena IUD now. No weight gain, barely a period. Insertion sucks, but it can stay in for 5 years or so.

I actually just got off the shot yesterday and switched to a type of the pill that was more neutral on weight gain. I had gained 30 pounds over a year while breastfeeding. So when I stopped I spent 90 days of eating right and exercising and finally lost 11 pounds. Only to find that after another week I gained 4 back from who knows where. I had been on depo before and had never had this much weight issues until after my second son which my DR said is the most common complaint. If you dont mind the weight gain or spotting for months while your body adjusts its great. 😅🤷‍♀️ Hope you find something that works for you!

Everyone is going to have different experiences with the shot or any type of birth control for that matter. The hormones will do different things for different people. Depo is my personal favorite of all birth control methods.

As you and Savannah mentioned, everyone’s experience is different, but I gained weight on depo and had longer periods. I then switched to pills but had issues with mood swings, so I switched to Mirena and loved it. With a decent diet and moderate exercise, I was able to lose the weight and deal with my carb cravings, and my mood felt so much more stable. Plus, no period after about a year! When it was time to try for a baby, I got pregnant within 2 months of having it removed (again everyone is different but this was my experience). 8 months postpartum and I have a Skyla IUD (similar to Mirena but with a lower dose of hormone) and so far so good. No period yet, but I’m still breastfeeding so it’s likely the no-period thing is because of the bf’ing. I also LOVE that I don’t need to go in every few months for shots or pull refills, etc.

My best friend has the shot and experienced weight gain too. I have the Mirena IUD and honestly dont care for it. My last period lasted 17 days. Its constant, heavy bleeding. It also depends on what side effects your okay with.

I used it many many years ago so it may have changed. I gained like 25-35 pounds. I had my regular cycle and light spotting every other day in between. I didn’t get pregnant on it and only had to take it every 3 months but i much rather take something different.
