Sippy Cups

What age is best to start transitioning from bottle to sippy cup or even drinking from a straw

At my daughters 6 month checkup, her pediatrician told me that I could start giving her water so I tried that in a straw sippy and she did great!!! I wish I had been persistent with offering her breastmilk in a sippy as well because we are still struggling with getting her off the milk bottles. I was an exclusive pumper and I really hated the idea of giving her breastmilk in a sippy because at the beginning she spit a lot out and I struggled to pump enough for her as it was!!! But now at 13 months I wish I had let her try a few oz per day...so long story short, if I were doing it all over again I would definitely start with milk in a sippy as soon as they can sit up in a high chair and reach for things:). For water in a sippy, my pediatrician cautioned that we shouldn’t give it until they gave me the green light so you should ask them! For us she never took to the 360 sippy cup although every other kid in her class loves them. She really did great with the straw sippy. At first we used the dr browns weighted straw cup but I hated them because the straws retained a soap taste. So now I use the Avent straw cup and she loves it. You may have to try several cups before you find the right one for your little one. Or you can do what my sister did and just pick a sippy cup and keep it around their play area and eventually they just pick it up and figure it out🙂

My daughter is 8.5 months and I’ve been trying to get her to drink from a sippy cup for almost 2 months with no luck. I exclusively breastfeed so it’s rare she even gets a bottle, which I hope is the reason why this is so difficult!

Munchkin makes these awesome sippy cups with a weighted straw. So whichever way they tilt the cup they are getting fluid. And the straw has a leak guard too! My son learned how to drink from a straw at 10 months with this cup

They recommended to start as soon as they turn one year old.

We started around 15 months. He was drinking water from a straw sippy cup (he preferred that over all other sippy cups) at 6 months. But bottles were completely gone by 16 months. Our pediatrician told us that by 18 months the latest is when the bottle should be gone.

@Kymberli, I’m glad to hear she’s not the only baby who hates the 360! Lol! these are the ones we ended up with. They work great but the straw is not weighted but it is leak proof so that’s good!!

Our silly child was drinking DIRECTLY from a cup by the time she was 9 months but because her arms and hands haven’t caught up to her swallowing abilities, and we didn’t have time to hold her cup all day, she went to a sippy cup. But she would NEVER HOLD IT...I will would still have to hold it for her. Last month, now 16 months, we noticed she liked drinking out of our straws, so we got her a cup with a straw, now she FINALLY drinks on her own. We leave it at height she can grab it at, she drinks, and puts it right back.

Straw cups! No sippy cups! Speech therapists of the world demand it!
