Suggestion on finding a baby-sitter?

Hi Parents, any suggestions on reliable ways to find a baby-sitter? We have a two-year old and will occasionally need a babysitter beyond the regular day-care time. What is a good way to do this? Any suggestions appreciated!

We used sittercity.com. I would’ve felt more comfortable finding a sitter that one of our friends or family knew... but we were in the situation that everybody we knew that has kids didn’t have a sitter. We just paid for a month subscription, interviewed a few people and found one person we really liked. And then found a “backup” sitter. We let her know that she was our backup that we were going to keep her number on us just in case. How it works... you post a job and sitters apply for them. You can see their profile and message them. Some already have background checks ran on them and you can see that and request a copy. It also lists if they are cpr and first aid certified.

Thanks so much, PK! how is the website compared with the care.com, which is also subscription based?

@aurora, sorry I just saw your question. We never tried care.com. When we first started looking into babysitting sites, for some reason I kept seeing negative reviews about it. My husbands coworker told us that he used sittercity before and found a sitter there that worked with their family for years before moving on. I also heard good things about urbansitter. I remember read a blog post comparing sittercity and urbansitter and I think that’s what made me decide on sittercity
