Thumb sucking

My daughter is 11 months and she sucks her thumb. She has 4 top teeth and two bottom. At what age should I start stopping her from doing it so she doesn’t mess up her teeth? And how?

My daughter is a year old and sucks her thumb when she is tired or to soothe herself to sleep. In my opinion it is better than a pacifier. I sucked my thumb until I was at least 4 or 5 and I have never needed braces and have perfectly straight teeth.

To answer your question... the sooner the better but you want her to stop by at the latest...age 5 or 6 which is around the time her adult teeth start erupting.

None of my kids got into that, but I have nieces and nephews that did it and some still do it, and some of their teeth are wrecked. One niece has teeth that look like a garage door opening because of it. So I would agree that the sooner you can break the habit the better, at least before permanent teeth start arriving. I prefer pacifiers because those are easy to sanitize if they get contaminated, and I can take them away at whatever point. Kids have have grubby little fingers and I'm not particularly fond of them putting them in their mouths, and if you take away their thumb entirely, I believe that's called manslaughter : )
