Toddler hates diaper time ... HELP!

Hi all! I wanted to know if anyone has any tips or tricks for diaper time. My son is 18 months old and recently started fighting getting his diaper changed. He used to love them, but now he will roll over, crawl or run away , and throw a tantrum. Plus he just figured out how to take his diaper off himself!!!! I try giving him toys or books to distract him but he just throws it. Is it time for potty training?? My son is also not speaking yet, so the thought of potty training seems daunting. Any help would be appreciated! :)

Maybe there’s a song you could sing or a video he could watch. In an “emergency” situation I’d hand my son my phone and it helped. I didn’t like doing it though and taking it away was another challenge but I wouldn’t have poop everywhere. lol

I would look up tips from elimination communication. There is a Facebook group for it and a ton of information online. It’s early potty training tips. Basically the thought behind it is that in foreign countries babies are potty trained from day one. I know he isn’t speaking yet but maybe you could do some sign language so he could communicate when he needs to go. You have this! http://godiaperfree.com/elimination-communication/

My daughter was the same way from jump! We have to keep some type of bottom on so she won’t take off her diaper. The game changer for diaper time: I gave her control. I ask her to bring me wipes & a diaper then I ask her to lay down so I can change her. I wait for her to come to me (avoid using force) We’ve started prepping her for potty training. As we change a dirty diaper we have her say mom(dad) I did poo poo. She now tells us when she poops & hands us diapers so we can clean her.

What kind of toys do you give him to hold? I have a whole set of items sitting at our changing station (the bed lol) to occupy him. His toys just don’t do it anymore, I have to give him something he’s never seen before or rarely seen.. so I have bottles of lotion, hair clips, crinkly wrappers, a box with small things in them (he likes to shake it or try to figure out how to open the box), instruction manuals to random stuff, etc etc. I have to rotate items as eventually he does get bored of them and it’s back to wrestling him down. He can’t quite communicate that he needs his diaper changed. And some times I feel like he enjoys sitting in his poopy diaper.. so we haven’t started potty training for that reason. He is 21 months.

My kiddos went through that same phase. My youngest still occasionally takes his diaper off, but not if I keep him in a one piece. For changes, I had to change my older sons diaper while he stood up. Having him stand was the only way to get him to stay still. Most times we would wash in the tub (wipe with toilet paper, then water) and he enjoyed being in there and playing with water. Other times, we had to make the call to use our phone when we were out. It sucked, but so glad he’s potty trained and no longer that child... My second, I have our Google home sing some happy song for him. I usually get my son involved somehow, like let him hold the diaper (sometimes he throws it in anger), hold a lotion bottle or rash cream, or find him some toy that he likes for the moment. If he absolutely will not stay down, I’ll put him in the tub. I typically prefer using the tub to clean poop (I never feel like wipes get the job done), but my youngest is very obsessed with the tub and will throw a tantrum if I try taking him out, so we try to avoid it.

My son has the same issue and has since day one. I sing his favorite song and make faces at him. He usually stops fighting it.

I have a special tiny toy he holds while I change him. It’s a little play ring from a cupcake lol but in regular life I wouldn’t let him play w it cause he’d just try and swallow it 🙄 so he’s soooo fascinated by even just holding it and looking at it while I change him lol is there some tiny little action figure he can hold that’s special?
