Toddler In Public Places

Anonymous

Anybody have any tips for handling tantrums in public places? I am starting to really dislike and avoid taking our toddler out. Even a quick outing turns me into a frustrated and flustered mess!

I've been starting to completely ignore negative behavior (as long as it's inconsequential). Praise the good behavior or praise your other child. "I love how so-and-so is sitting so nicely!" After doing this for a few weeks my son stops his tantrum after only a few minutes.

Definitely do not plead, bargain, or threaten or bribe your child. It only feeds the behavior. I agree with ignoring it. Sometimes I would say “you’re so mad. Mommy loves you and I am here when you’re ready to calm down.”

I guess I am more agitated by what other people think vs. the tantrums.

I just give mine food whenever we are out. She is too busy eating to care about other things. I give it to her before the a tantrum starts.

It is very frustrating but you can’t stop taking them because then they will never know how to behave in public! Be strong, you got this!

I think the concern about what others think is a very valid concern but I always try to remember that I most likely will never see those people again and it will make a better impression if you act with patience as much as possible.

If my daughter throws a fit I walk away. I make sure I can see her but I ignore her. She has started to realize that tantrums don’t get her any attention from me.

So I found a lady on instagram who talks about this. She says to water the flowers and ignore the weeds. So praise the good behavior and ignore all the negative behavior. Which I know is extremely difficult.. especially in public places when you just need the tantrum to be over. Anyways, the lady’s instagram is “simply on purpose”. If you go to her page, listen to her talks on tantrums, junk 1 and junk 2. Some of things hits home for me and I’m like wow l, I didn’t think about it in those terms.. totally makes sense! There’s some stuff that I’m like ehh but for the most part it’s really good!
