Can he say any words or is he just babbling now? My son had a similar issue. He could say only 4 words at 20 months. We ended up making an appointment with the ENT and they said he has fluid in his ear which may contribute to his speech delay since it affects your hearing. They are evaluating him in a couple of days to see if he needs to get a tube in his ear. We also made an appointment with the neurologist to see if he has autism or something else that keeps him delayed. We started speech therapy at 20 months. It’s been three months and now my son can say 50 words! I think at this point it would be useful to at least get a referral from your pediatrician for speech therapy. In my state they offer it for free through the government. See if they have an early intervention program in your state. Let me know if you need anything! I completely understand your frustration. Also we decided to put my son in daycare after we realized he wasn’t talking and now he picks up words from there too! It was definitely worth it!

No. Suggest having a medical professional evaluate his hearing, develoment, etc.

Okay, so other people have kind of alarming responses so I am going to add my less scary personal experience. My daughter is turning 2 at the end of this month. She didn’t say anything until recently. No “mama” no “baba” nothing. Then, suddenly out of the blue, I gave her a snack and she said “thank you mom”. A full a$$ sentence and apparently this isn’t weird. Some kids just wait until they are ready. As someone who works with children with a variety of special needs, if the rest of their cognitive function seems good, I wouldn’t worry. Doctors look at all sorts of things to see if your baby is keeping up developmentally. Speech is just one of many on a checklist. IF your pediatrician hasn’t mentioned it, I would assume the baby is doing fine. Don’t be afraid to bring it up anyway though, if there turns out to be nothing wrong, at least you have peace of mind.

Talk to a Dr, but we were scared with my little guy. He could make every animal sound known (which apparantly counts as words), but did not say anything other than mamma, dadda, and ball, until he turned 2.5 years old. Over night he spoke sentences!

Yes I finally put him in daycare and he’s doing great with the other kids and learning a lot and he’s suppose to go and get a hearing test done to see if he had fluid in his ear as well .

What did his pediatrician say at his 2 year old check up? My son also wasnt talking much so they gave me 2 months to check back in. During that time I had to overexplain everything and talk constantly to help him learn to talk. It worked and now he talks all day! Some kids just take longer but definitely make sure it is on his doctors radar in case he needs speech therapy.
