Tooth Decay

Anyone’s kids have tooth decay? Just left the dentist and my son needs 6 caps in his teeth. I feel like it's all my fault! The dentist we went too doesn't use anesthesia either, so he'd have to be awake throughout the whole thing...hes only 2 😭 any one else go through this?

Hi there! My daughter had cavities on her 4 from teeth they were so bad that they were breaking. They told me that there was nothing they could do but to take them out. I cried and worried for almost a month until her surgery her dentist told me that they were able to put crowns on all of them and she had 4 more decaying teeth in the back as well. So they put silver crowns on the back too. She was asleep through out the process and when she woke up she was in a lot of pain but it went away within a day. She was not even 2 when that happened. I also felt the same guilty and angry at myself. She didn’t eat candy, didn’t drink juice and I brushed her teeth every night. If your dentist doesn’t use anesthesia on a baby I would recommend looking for another specialist. It would be horrible to have the baby go through so much pain and it would leave the baby scared of the dentist forever! Best of luck!!!

Why in the world don’t they use anesthesia?! I’m just thinking a)How will they keep LO Still during procedure b) seems like the actual act of Trying to keep them still could be traumatizing. 😔 I’d look for another specialist. Is that an actual pediatric dentist you went too? Oh and don’t feel bad mama. Teeth are such a sensitive thing. And some teeth are naturally more brittle and susceptible to things like this. I have a friends whose youngest has a dental condition that made teeth more brittle and always having issues. No matter what, you’re doing your best to care for your LO.

I haven’t experienced that yet, but if it were me, I’d look into getting nitrous (laughing gas) in lieu of being sedated. Not undermining the fact that dentists/assistants can do their job, but like with any other profession, you have those with more experience just like with less experience. They flush out their system by the end of the appt with oxygen. I don’t know, in my experience (having worked at dental offices for 10yrs) that’s what I prefer, personally.

Sorry let me clarify... after using nitrous ... doing the procedures and all.. they run oxygen through their system.

I’d suggest getting a second opinion.

I would for sure go to a different dentist. Mine doesn’t even advise bringing them in until 3

Yes I've definitely been calling around for a second opinion... The dentist I took him too said they wrap him in a blanket (like a straight jacket!!) His arms and legs won't be able to move and then we can hold his head!!! I'm like WTHHHH?! That's so traumatizing... He doesn't even let me brush his teeth after the dentist now. Ty guys! Appreciate the comments!

One of my friends is a pediatric dentist that advocate for more conservative actions for dealing with childhood cavities, forgot what his lecture said but I remember there are much less invasive procedures that could manage childhood cavities. would def go seek second opinion.

I just took my daughter to the dentist too she is 14 mo and also has cavities the dentist told me that there is a liquid that they can apply in their teeth that helps to hardened them but that it turns the teeth black, I chose that she has another appointment next month to see if it’s helping if it is they will reapply it, it doesn’t look nice but if it works at least she won’t have to have something more invasive
