Tummy time trouble?

My 2mo absolutely despises tummy time! I’m trying to do it 3x a day for just 10min and even that is a struggle. We’ve tried it in various places—crib, play mat, laying on me, changing table— doesn’t make a difference. We’ve incorporated toys, music...thoughts on things to do to make this easier? It’s a struggle for a lot of little ones I’ve heard. I’m told she should be up to an hour of tummy time by 3 months and I’m afraid she won’t be by that time!

My daughter hated tummy time because of acid reflux. She got maybe 15 minutes a day until 4 months old. Some days there really wasn't tummy time.around 6mo she would go for longer periods of time. She is now 8mo and crawling. Some babies just hate tummy time. I did find that tummy time on a pillow or bed helped. I think the hard floor was too much for her stomach.

I wouldn’t stress about it too much. My son struggled with tummy time too and we definitely did less than you. He’s a year and a half now... reached all physical milestones at typical times.

So first, my daughter hated tummy time sooo much and I think it’s really common! She’s 10 months now and pulls herself up and is already trying to stand alone so don’t get too concerned about future milestones. It will all work out!! I got the following advice on tummy time that helped. First my pediatrician recommended to turn her on her belly for 2 minutes after each diaper change. At that time you’re changing diapers constantly right? And at that age most babies are in a great mood during diaper changes. So right after just flip her for a minute or so. That’s one way to easily get some time in. Also do you have a yoga ball or one of those exercise balls?? My baby had some colic issues and she loved resting on one of those balls on her belly for a few minutes every couple hours. It was like built in tummy time. The other way to sneak it in is when she’s resting against you on your chest. I know you said she doesn’t like it but keep trying...my daughter didn’t like more than a minute or so either at that age. Lay back in an inclined position and position her in the center of your chest. She will like this because she’s close to Mama and it encourages her to try lifting her head to look up at you. Finally do you have a black and white board book?? If not order one from Amazon today!! Just search “black and white board book” it doesn’t matter which one you get just have one...when she’s on her tummy show it to her. They love the contrast of black and white at that age and the distraction should buy you a few more minutes on her tummy. As time goes by she will tolerate more. One thing to remember is tummy time at this age doesn’t have to mean perfectly horizontal..any kind of inclined time on her tummy (propped on a boppy or a few regular pillows works too!) also counts. Good luck!!

You’re doing great! Just keep trying! My son didn’t really like it until he figured out how to roll around

My son hated tummy time until he was 4 months old. He would scream the entire time! Now, he loves it!! Just be patient, it’s just a phase! 🙂

My little one didn't tolerate it until we put one of those small oblong/Lima bean shaped pillows under her arms to prop her a bit. (Not sure how else to describe it lol)

Don’t worry he will like it when he’s ready. My friends baby hated it so she never did it. At 3 1/2 months he finally liked it and rolled over from back to tummy in the same week

I just propped my son up on his boppy pillow on our bed so that he wasnt laying on the hard ground, maybe try that. If that doesnt work a little, then dont stress it and give it a month or so.

I use to do it for 1-2 minutes after every diaper change with a special toys and it was enough to like it after couple months

My baby hated it at first, so much that she figured out how to roll over. I stayed patient and know things can take time, everybaby different. Then one day she decided it was a neat thing, and got good about it. Wait until they're ready, theyll be alright

My LO started tummy time late in the game because he also didn’t like it. He had a small case of colic and was miserable until he was about 4 months. They sort of come into it on their own. But he definitely was not getting 1 hour and now he’s 9 months and soon to walk. Don’t worry, just make sure you rotate their head so it doesn’t flatten.

You’re doing great! It’s super difficult for them in the first few weeks of life. Even into month 3! Until the figure out how to keep their arms outstretched and that they need to push themselves up, they’re pretty much laying face down on the mat, in a position which limits their line of vision- they take their surrounding in with their senses and so much of it is visual- so it’s uncomfortable! Also, while they’re exercising their neck muscles by trying to keep their heads up, they may not be strong enough yet to lift their heads from the tummy time position. It’s unfamiliar to them but the more they practice, the easier it gets. I typically do 1-5 minutes depending on a variety of factors. Some days/times may seem easier bc they’ve slept well, they’ve had a good bm, they’re not gassy.... also, like I said, the less time they’ve been outside the tummy, the more of a challenge it is at first. Keep it up! Muscle memory will develop and your LO will be doing push ups and the “Superman” in no time! It may be helpful to use a variety of positions also- place a rolled up towel under the chest to raise the head and shoulders slightly; Place your LO over your leg so that their toes are touching the floor and they can maneuver themselves over you; Focus on applying resistance to their feet while they’re flat on their tummy, so they’re able to inch across the mat and they’re face isn’t just resting on the mat....there are SO many ways to do tummy time! Best of luck to u!!

I did zero tummy time with my daughter. She turned out fine and walked early even. I did give her lots of floor time on her back.

Mirror! We put one of those 4’ mirrors landscape and propped up against the wall and our kiddo loved watching himself on that.
