When did birthday goodie bags at school become a thing?

It seems that when a child has a birthday they bring goodie bags for all their classmates at school. When did this become a thing? Does everyone do this and why? I didn’t have this growing up so I just don’t understand.

At my kids school they do it due to allergies. I don’t understand it either.. pretty expensive. I just get a snack that doesn’t have nuts or strawberries in it or whatever the allergies are in the class.

Seems pretty unnecessary to me. That's something I would do at the actual party but not for school

The school I taught for strongly discouraged goodie bags. So, I wouldn’t feel guilty about skipping that. Hope that helps.

I wouldn’t be doing goodie bags for the school. If I was going to do them, it would just be at his party. But no, they aren’t necessary. Most of it gets thrown away.

At my daughter’s old school they had goodie bags for everything and I felt bad but I also was kinda mad that it was allowed to go on, some of us don’t have that kind of money to send in goodie bags for every occasion.

At my daughter birthday celebration at school I took free nut cupcakes and a little goodie bags just with nut free candy for everyone but we did like that's because not everyone from her classroom were invited to her birthday party

You don’t have to do what everyone is doing my first grader told me it wasn’t necessary to bring cupcakes to his class since we were having a party anyway all the other kids do it
