Winter coats issue with car seats

I've heard that you shouldn’t put coats on babies while in carseats. Last winter my son was in the infant carseat so I always bundled him up with the drape over the handle. Is it true? What do all you parents do? Thanks!

Coats off and we leave either a fleece or hoodie on for car rides. Extra blanket in back for each kid if they want it, but they usually don’t since they will easily overheat. Definitely not recommended to keep them on. There are scary crash test videos online of test done in that situation and it can be really bad.

We keep a blanket in the back seat just Incase but I try to have the car warmed up before hand and just have him in his long sleeved shirt and hat for the ride and then put on his jacket once we get there. I do the same! I roast if I have my jacket on in the car, so I can imagine they would too!

Poncho over thin layers for super cold weather. I made this one. You can also buy them on Etsy.

I definitely warm up the car beforehand (was so nice when we had an auto start car with just one child!) and keep coats inside the car for them. There's also blankets for them inside the car, and for me too ☺️

Would cozy bodysuit be okay in car seat?

A thin fleece is okay. It can’t be puffy or have too much extra fabric under the straps of the car seat because it does not allow the straps to be tightened enough.

I myself am new to this also and don’t know, but what I do is I strap my daughter into her car seat and put her coat on backwards over the car seat straps. It’s not a heavy coat, just an extra layer, put a blanket over her legs and then drape a thin blanket over the handle (that I hold) just so if the wind is blowing it’s not to, to cold. Seems to work for us. -But let me know if what I’m doing is unsafe please! 😇

Teirryn: that works and should be safe. However if you have a handled carrier car seat they make special winter covers for them.

Lauren: thank you, I’ll definitely have to look into them. I also have one of these saved to my amazon cart. Has anyone heard any reviews on these?

That’s very similar to what I was talking about. I haven’t used any since my 7 month old uses a convertible 3 in one car seat hence the poncho. Skip hop is a good brand so I believe that would be a good one.

Teirryn I really like that one!! I also had the poncho and bc it drapes it can get dirty I like yours bc it's tight knit I feel like it will keep heat in and just unzip when your inside!!

CJN: yes I personally wouldn’t use a poncho with that type of car seat. I just really hated the carrier style car seat and so did my son since he likes to be able to see more.

We use are car seat cover it’s a poncho I make. To keep her warm it goes over the straps so it’s safe. And also warm.

Poncho that flips on the back and you can strap the car seat in securely on cold days we might leave on other days we slip off and have the heat on. She gets hot quickly.

I make sure no puffy jackets or buntings. But a coat like the nano puff from Patagonia is thinner and ok for car seat. Or a car seat cover that’s for winter.

I am using this one this year. I had a great one 2 years ago but can’t remember the brand. https://onekid.com/collections/the-road-coat-down
