Swim classes

We are really big on water safety and recently started our 22 month old in swim classes. There’s a lot of singing and nursery rhymes which don’t benefit my kiddo as she’s deaf. She hates going to class. She will arch her back like a gymnast and kick anyone in a 2 foot radius. We used to be able to get about 15-20 minutes through class before she threw a fit but today it was the moment she saw ... More

Does your pool happen to have a splash pad or zero entry? Do you think she just may want to be more independent? We have a one like the one in the photo I’ve attached. It took a few times for him to get used to it but he loves just being able to do his own thing now! I still take it off for a bit every swim because I want him to learn how. I don’t want him to get so comfortable in it that he fo... More

Pool time?

Is it okay for a 5 month old to get in a pool? My cousin has a chlorine pool and I want my LO to experience a pool while the weather is nice.

I guess its okay as long as you wash them off after the swimming session. :)

My baby’s first time in the pool was at 1 month old. No sunscreen till 6 months! I learned that the hard way. Just make sure your lo is shaded :)

Toddler cleats

Hi all! My 3.5 yr old is about to start baseball and I'd like to get him some cleats. I've tried a couple stores and no one has toddler sized ones ☹️ Has anyone had any luck with finding them? Thanks in advance!

DIY program for teaching 3-5 year olds to swim?

So we got a pass for a pool near our house, but unfortunately they don’t have swim lessons for kids under 6. Can we start teaching them ourselves if we go once a week? My goal is to teach them to float and paddle without the floaties, as well as basic safety skills, but I don’t know where to start. Any resources would be appreciated!

Hi Valentina! Paddles can be super useful but I find that they offer too much water resistance for beginner swimmers. I'd recommend paddles for an older child who has already mastered the front crawl and is just working on perfecting their stroke. I'd recommend noodles for beginner swimmers because it offers some flotation and support while they are working on beginning skills like kick... More

Any advice for teaching them to actually ride it? We got one for our two year old and she loves to get on it and walk but isn’t working on the balance part of it at all!

We didn’t teach him to balance on it, it just naturally evolved once he had been riding it and gained confidence. It’s pretty amazing to see. Just let her enjoy it and grow with it.

3 is a good age assuming you can find one that will take that age kids! My daughter went to a hip hop class at 2.5.

You should try your best to get him in now . Most of time when a child start out young doing the things they love the better they be at it as time go by.

Hello! What is the best time or way to start swimming lessons for toddlers with ear tubes? Is there a special precaution we must take? In our case, our son has had tubes placed about 15 months ago. One of them might be starting to come out. Really hoping we can start swimming lessons ... But not sure if the best thing is to wait for confirmation that the tubes are out. Appreciate any insights 😊

My son has had tubes since 10months old and he was able to take swim lessons with them in no problem. Unless they are going to be going deeper than 4 feet our ENT says there isn’t usually an issue.

We used ear plugs with ours. Heat them up in your hands and then press outwards towards the corners of the ears. After the first few times there was no fear or frustrations. It was important for us to get use to plugs because we swam in the ocean a lot in the summer.

My son is about to turn 5 and we want to get him a bike for his birthday. He’s already adept with a strider bike so we were thinking it’s time to try one with pedals. He’s very tall and leggy for his age... what’s a good first bike that’s suited for an early rider but that he won’t outgrow for at least a few years?

  • Stephanie

We also go the craigslist route- you can get a much less expensive bike and not have to worry as much about it needing to last longer due to the cost. Just FYI, my tall-for-age almost 5y/o has been riding a 16” bike since he was 4 years, 3 months (I noticed the link above was for a 14”). He went straight from the Strider to the 16” bike. The one he uses at home is a 14” since that was the best... More

I’d shop good old Walmart for a bike this age! As much as I believe that chain is destroying every ma and pa store around. A bike for a 5 year old is pretty much a throw away. I’d just shop cheap for the time being.

My daughter is in kindergarten and just started playing youth soccer. She enjoys it but can be kind of passive, standing towards the back of the scrum. Are there ways to encourage to be more aggressive but in a constructive manner? Thanks!

  • Lesley

Just play with her and show her how to be more aggressive. Also, she will build more confidence as time goes on and it will show on the field

Our 3 year old just started soccer. It's pretty "free form" if you can imagine. I find she is more willing to engage if I get out there with her. She'll kick the ball and run around with me before she'll engage with the adult coaches. Fortunately, it's a pretty relaxed setting and most of the other parents are playing around too. I figure we're exposing her to some... More

My little one starting learn swim. She can put head into water with eyes open. Will that hurt eyes? I noticed her skin getting red around her eyes after many times. But her eyes has not red.. Our pool is salt water.

Are strider bikes worth it? I have a 2 year old that is more than ready and was thinking about getting him one. My older child is 7 and says she does not want a balance bike, she wants a bike with training wheels, the previous one is now too small, I told her that's fine and said maybe when she's ready we can take off training wheels and practice and she said no way. My husband is a bike salesman ( full disclosure does NOT work for any of these companies) but he and I highly recommend the Burley balance bike. It will last forever. It is much sturdier and has real parts and it has no puncture wheels. It's much more bang for your buck too. The strider bikes aren't bad at all. I would say they are second best. And I would definitely go with a balance b... More

You can also make a balance bike out of a pedal bike by removing the pedals! But I see kids going faster and enjoying themselves more with the training wheels when they start that old.

    Mar 26, 2017

I think you can accomplish most everything they do in infant swim lessons just by taking your kid in the water yourself if you don't want to pay for expensive lessons. I definitely agree with Erin that it's good to get them comfortable in the water at a young age so they aren't scared of putting their face under. But beyond that I taught dozens of kids over the years who would tak... More
