Lunch packing for toddlers and preschoolers isn’t always easy. However, with the right lunchbox ideas and tips, you can set yourself and your child up for success!

Involve your child

Show your child the lunchbox and the snacks the day before or the morning before leaving home and going to school. If possible, give your child choices so he feels invested in the lunch. Putting the snacks in a separate container could be a good idea, but don’t forget to show where that container is! Bento box style lunchboxes with compartments are also a great way to separate different food items.

Teach the importance of refueling

Explain to your child that lunch at school is enjoyed with other classmates and friends, but that it is very important to eat before going back to play and have fun. Even at a young age, a child can understand that she needs to refuel her body and get a lot of energy in order to keep on having a great time for the rest of the day.

Take your child's feedback

If the lunchbox comes back uneaten, take time to ask your child the reason why he did not eat. For example: Are you hungry at lunchtime? Do you have enough time to eat? Is it difficult to open your lunch box? Do you like the food I prepared? Would you like to choose with me the food for tomorrow’s lunchbox?

Once you better understand why this happens, you’ll be able to make some adjustments. Having your child participate in the choice of foods and in the preparation of the lunchbox can help encourage him to eat.

Include a protein

Protein is a crucial nutrient for growing children, as it plays a vital role in building and repairing tissues in the body. Including protein in your child's lunch can help keep them feeling full and satisfied throughout the school day, and can also provide the energy and nutrients they need to power through their daily activities. Here are some ideas:

  1. Hard-Boiled Eggs: Hard-boiled eggs are a great source of protein and are easy to pack in a lunchbox.

  2. Nut Butter (or Sun Butter) Sandwich: Nut butters, such as peanut butter or almond butter, are a tasty and easy source of protein. If your child has an allergy, or if their school is nut-free, sunflower butter can be used as a substitute.

  3. Cheese and Crackers: Cheese is a great source of protein and calcium.

  4. Turkey or Ham Roll-Ups: Deli meat is a quick and easy protein source, and can be rolled up with a slice of cheese and veggies for a fun and nutritious lunch option.

  5. Yogurt: Yogurt is a tasty and convenient source of protein, and can be paired with fruit and granola for a balanced lunch option.
