Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and, of course, feasting. However, for parents with young children, it can also be a time of stress, trying to keep little ones entertained while managing holiday preparations.

Here are some effective strategies for keeping your kids engaged and (hopefully) keeping the holiday calm and tantrum-free.

1. Craft Stations: Set up a small area where kids can engage in Thanksgiving-themed crafts. Activities like coloring turkey templates or making placemats not only keep kids occupied but also allows them to express their creativity. This is especially effective for younger children who love hands-on activities.

2. Thanksgiving Story Corner: Create a cozy corner with Thanksgiving-themed books. Older children can read to younger ones, fostering a sense of bonding and keeping them all engaged in a calm activity.

3. Cooking with Kids: Involve your children in simple kitchen tasks, like washing vegetables or mixing ingredients. Cooking together isn't just fun for kids, it can be a great way to practice fine motor skills and learn math concepts.

4. Outdoor Treasure Hunt: If weather permits, organize a simple treasure hunt in the backyard or nearby park. Hide Thanksgiving-themed items and provide clues. This can help get all their energy out and hopefully keep the rest of the day somewhat calm.

5. Thanksgiving Movie Marathon: Select a series of family-friendly movies with a Thanksgiving theme. A movie marathon can be a relaxing way for the whole family to unwind together after a festive meal.

6. Gratitude Game: Introduce a gratitude game where each child takes turns sharing what they're thankful for. It's never too early to teach kids about gratitude.

7. Puzzle and Board Games: Set up a table with puzzles and board games suitable for different age groups. These games can be a great way for different generations to interact and bond.

8. Mini Parade: Host a mini Thanksgiving parade. Kids can dress up and parade around the house or yard, showcasing their costumes or crafts made earlier.

9. Quiet Time with Audio Stories or Podcasts: For a calming activity, set up a listening station where kids can hear audio stories or child-friendly podcasts. This can be a great way to settle down an overexcited group.

10. Help with Decorations: Get the kids involved in decorating the house. Assign them simple tasks like setting the table or hanging decorations. This gives them a sense of responsibility and helps keep them engaged.

Books to help teach kids about gratitude

Creating a list of children's books that focus on gratitude is a wonderful way to introduce young readers to the concept of thankfulness. Here are five books that beautifully encapsulate this theme:

  1. "Thank You, Omu!" by Oge Mora - This story revolves around a generous elderly woman who shares her delicious stew with everyone in the community.

  2. "The Thank You Book" by Mo Willems - Part of the beloved Elephant and Piggie series, this book shows the characters thanking everyone they know, teaching children about expressing gratitude.

  3. "Gracias/Thanks" by Pat Mora, illustrated by John Parra - A bilingual book that follows a young boy as he recounts the everyday things he’s thankful for, offering a simple yet profound perspective on gratitude.

  4. "Bear Says Thanks" by Karma Wilson, illustrated by Jane Chapman - In this story, Bear wants to host a dinner for his friends but has no food. His friends bring dishes to share, and Bear realizes he has a lot to be thankful for, even without food.

  5. "Thankful" by Eileen Spinelli, illustrated by Archie Preston - This charming book uses rhymes to explore the different reasons people, from gardeners to firefighters, are thankful.
