Exciting news out of the childcare industry today! The Biden administration recently announced their plans to update a federal program that will reduce - and even eliminate - childcare costs for at least 80,000 low-income families.

This will come from increasing the Child Care & Development Block Grant (CCDBG) by 30 percent, adding an additional $1.86 billion dollars to the $8 billion dollar program.

So, why is this change so impactful for parents? Let's break it down:

⭐  Easier Access: The updates to the CCDBG program will ensure that more eligible children receive the support they need. Currently, only 15 percent of eligible children are served by the program, but with the proposed changes, more families can access quality child care without financial burden.

💵  Copayment Caps: Imagine paying no more than 7 percent of your income for child care! The administration is introducing a cap on copayments, making childcare costs more predictable and manageable for families. Moreover, they encourage states to waive copayments entirely for families earning below 150 percent of the federal poverty level, providing much-needed relief for those who need it most.

📈 Payment Stability: Childcare providers play a crucial role in our children's development, and the new rule acknowledges their importance. By shifting to payment based on enrollment instead of attendance, providers will experience more stability in their income. This change also incentivizes providers to welcome low-income families, who may have varying attendance due to work or other reasons.

📝 Streamlined Application Process: Applying for child care assistance will become easier and more convenient. States can move the CCDBG application process online, eliminating the need for paper applications. Additionally, siblings of children already receiving the subsidy may automatically become eligible, reducing the administrative burden on families.

This initiative recognizes the vital role that childcare plays in the well-being of families and the economy. By reducing costs, increasing accessibility, and enhancing payment stability, parents will have more peace of mind and the opportunity to thrive both personally and professionally.

While these changes won't solve all the challenges the childcare system faces, they are an important step in the right direction. The next steps would be for these changes to go through the law-making process, and if enacted, they would be in place by Spring 2024.

Together, let's build a brighter future for our children and make quality childcare accessible to all families in need!
