Prioritizing Childcare in Presidential Campaigns: A Call to Action

By Winnie on July 22, 2024

In the recent presidential debate, a crucial topic was raised but neither candidate gave it the attention it deserved: childcare. As an industry leader, Winnie recognizes that childcare is a bipartisan issue— we can disagree on policies or how to fund it,  but we cannot deny it’s importance in the lives of families and the broader economy.

It’s time to call on our presidential candidates to prioritize this issue and provide clear, actionable plans for the future of childcare in America.

Questions that deserve the attention of our presidential candidates

Access and Affordability:

  • What specific policies will you implement to ensure that childcare is both accessible and affordable for all families?
  • Will you increase funding for childcare centers, and support for working parents to make quality childcare affordable and accessible.

Support for Childcare Workers:

  • What measures will you take to support the childcare workforce, ensuring they are well-compensated and valued for their critical work?
  • Are there plans for wage increases, benefits, and professional development opportunities that recognize the importance of childcare workers?

Work-Life Balance for Families:

  • How will your policies support working families in balancing their professional and personal lives?
  • Are there plans for comprehensive family leave policies, flexible work arrangements, and support systems for working parents?

Economic Impact:

  • What is your strategy for addressing the economic impact of inadequate childcare on the workforce and the economy?

Equity:

  • How will your administration ensure that all families, regardless of socio-economic status or background, have access to quality childcare?
  • Please share any policies that address disparities and promote inclusivity in childcare access. Are there plans that include targeted support for underserved communities?

Why Childcare & Early Education Matter

Childcare is not just a family issue; it is a societal and economic one. Quality childcare and early education supports early childhood development, and sets our children up for future academic success. Early Childhood programs are important to all families, regardless of their family structure or employment status.

At Winnie, we believe that it’s time for childcare to be at the forefront of the national conversation. We call on all presidential candidates to provide clear, actionable answers to these critical questions and to make childcare a central part of their campaign platforms. By doing so, they will not only support families but also strengthen our society and economy as a whole.

Let's ensure that in the next debate, childcare is not just a question left hanging, but a priority addressed with the seriousness it deserves.
