We are horrified by the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the Texas law banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, before most people even know they’re pregnant. The law, which does not make exceptions for cases of rape or incest, reverses the 1973 landmark case of Roe v. Wade, which made access to abortion legal. This ban disproportionately affects communities of color and those living in poverty.
Additionally, the law “deputizes private citizens” by encouraging them to sue and get paid for turning in anyone accused of “aiding and abetting” an illegal abortion, whether that’s a doctor, relative, front-desk staff at a clinic, or even a ride-share driver. This is unconscionable.
This law will not reduce the number of abortions. Studies have shown that banning access to abortion does not decrease abortion rates; it just makes them less safe. What does decrease abortion rates is increasing access to birth control and providing support for families. Yet, Texas has not prioritized policies designed to help pregnant people during or after their pregnancy such as healthcare, increased government programs, or child care assistance.
As a business that operates in Texas and employs people in Texas, we are in opposition to this legislation that is clearly not in the best interest of children and families. No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, the facts show that this law will not decrease the number of abortions, and will lead to severe risk of harm - and death - for pregnant people in Texas. We cannot remain silent, and we encourage other companies nationwide to take a stand.
