Top 5 Childcare Trends to Watch in 2025

By Winnie on December 13, 2024

At Winnie, we have the privilege of watching the childcare industry evolve in real time. Our platform connects millions of families searching for care and education to over 250,000 providers, so we see trends as they emerge. Based on our data and industry insight, here are five childcare trends we believe will define 2025.

1. Flexibility Will Reign Supreme

Childcare needs are no longer one size fits all. Families are demanding options that match their schedules and lifestyles. At Winnie, we’ve seen an explosion in searches for part-time care, drop-in care, and care that is tailored to the needs of specific children, such as children with special needs. This is no surprise—parents today are looking for childcare arrangements as flexible as their lives. Recent studies reinforce this trend, showing that access to adaptable childcare solutions directly impacts workforce participation rates, especially for mothers.

2. Technology Is Transforming Childcare

Childcare is catching up to other industries when it comes to tech adoption. Providers are leveraging tools for everything from parent communication to curriculum planning. At Winnie, we’ve seen providers increasingly adopt technology to improve their operating margins. As we look ahead, technology will continue to close the affordability gap in childcare, not just by improving the margins for childcare businesses, but by doing things like helping families discover subsidies they might not know about. We predict that childcare businesses will be increasingly turning to technology & AI to improve their margins and the companies that help them navigate this transition will be sought after.

3. The Childcare Workforce Holds the Key to Sustainability

We talk a lot about childcare accessibility, but none of that is possible without a strong workforce. Since the pandemic, wages for childcare workers have increased, but the sector still faces challenges with retention and recruitment. We expect 2025 to bring more investments in professional development and career pathways for early educators. We’re seeing this in other countries like Australia with outsized childcare markets. This is essential because the quality of childcare is only as strong as the people providing it.

4. Declining Birth Rates Will Spur Action

The birth rate hit a historic low in 2023, down from a prior low in 2022. This decline in fertility rates may lead to reduced competition for childcare spots as fewer children are born, prompting providers to adapt their strategies to cater to a smaller population of young children.

Since this trend represents a major problem for the future of the US, we predict the government will take an increased interest in programs and policies that promote the growth of families. We are already seeing many states roll out Universal Pre-K for 3 and 4 year olds and we expect programs that help parents afford children to only increase.

5. The Shift Toward Center-Based Care Will Accelerate

One of the clearest trends recently is the reduction in home-based care providers compared to center-based care providers. Center-based childcare has been growing in revenue and market share. In 2025, while we expect this trend to continue, we’re doing a lot of work at Winnie to ensure all providers can grow their businesses and thrive regardless of size.

Looking Ahead

These trends aren’t just random predictions; they’re already taking shape. Some of these are really positive and encouraging (increased use of technology) and some are deeply troubling (declining birth rate). At Winnie, we believe we have a role to play in shining a light on these trends and helping families and providers navigate the changing landscape.
