When do babies start napping only once a day?

My 12 month old naps twice a day and my MIL acted like it was weird, but I know he definitely can’t make it with only one yet. Her twin grandkids, who are 18 months take one nap a day, but after spending a week with them in close quarters, it seems like they need another nap, or maybe it’s just me. What age do kids go off their second nap?

Every kid is different! Most start to drop the second nap around 14 months but some are earlier and some are later. You know your kid best! If you think he still needs two naps, then two naps it is!! He will let you know when he is ready to drop to one by just not going to sleep for his first one lol. And there is a transition period of going back and forth between one and two naps. Just follows his cues! You know him better than anyone so don’t let your MIL make you question your parenting.

We didn’t drop until 15 monthsish. You will know it’s time to drop when one nap gets super short, or he starts to fight going to sleep. It isn’t weird in my opinion. I’ve read 12-18 months is when you drop.... seems you’ve got plenty of time to me. Your MIL can mind her own business and go raise someone else’s kids bc you know what your kid needs

My LO is 13mo and we are still on 2 naps. Both naps are usually 1 1/2hrs long.

We dropped at 12 months just cause she started daycare and all the other 1 year olds in her class were older and on one nap per day. She adjusted quick and now takes one 2-3 hour nap.

My son took 2 naps a day until he was 15 months old. Tell your MIL to mind her own business 😂😂😂

My first went to one nap around 15 months but my second did it closer to one year (but honestly it was probably me pushing her into one nap so that my two kids would nap around the same time). Every kid has different sleep needs and I think it also depends on how well they are sleeping at night. Go with your gut!

My daughter started switching back and forth around 11 months and stopped completely by 15 months. I have a friend whose 2.5 year old is still on 2 naps a day. Your child will let you know...the way my daughter let me know was by fighting her morning nap and then crashing at lunchtime and skipping her afternoon nap or taking a very short afternoon nap. Also, most MILs are awesome at being experts in passing judgment on their DILs. 😊

My almost 15 month old still naps twice/day. We tried dropping her down to 1 nap but it didn't work so we are sticking with 2!

Sounds good to me! If it’s working for your child and you, keep with it. And enjoy it! My daughter stopped napping all together way before she even turned 2 😩

My son dropped to one nap around 10-12 months and I thought it was so early for him! He's always been a great night sleeper though... so, I guess his sleep needs were covered. Every kid is different though! I knew it was time to drop a nap when his early morning nap was so spotty. He'd be playing in his crib for an hour instead of sleeping or just flat out refused to go to sleep during that time for weeks. I just adjusted his schedule and he's been doing about a 2-3 hour nap daily ever since. You'll know what your kid needs! Don't let anyone else try to tell you otherwise. :-)

16 months here and still napping twice a day. Maybe once or twice a week, she’ll take a long morning nap and not nap in the afternoon but we still usually do 2. And even on those days that she doesn’t nap in the afternoon, I still give her about an hour of alone/quiet time in her crib.

I just commented on Monday and it seems she might have just transitioned herself on Wednesday to one almost 3hr nap!! I went to put her down at normal first nap time (930ish) and she refused it and ended up going down 1050-130ish! Then she went down at 745pm and woke up at 815am so we will only take one nap today. Wonder if this will be her new norm or just a growth spurt

My daughter dropped the second nap around 15 months. She just turned 2 and we are down to no naps. Getting her to take her afternoon nap was exhausting for everyone. Now she sleeps from 7:30 PM until 8:00 AM, and that seems to cover her needs.

Congrats, Cristobal!! I know a lot of parents love the naptime, but I am excited for my almost 2 year old to drop her second nap too. We aren’t there yet, but I so look forward to having the mid day flexibility to plan and do things at that time.

My just turned 2yr old still naps twice a day on weekends or during vacations. He’s in daycare during the week, and they just do one long nap a day. I assumed he would switch to one nap at home once he was in daycare for a bit (he started there 6 months ago), but that hasn’t happened. It works fine for us, so I see no reason to try to change it. When you need sleep, you need sleep.

My son is 22 months. He has only been taking one nap for over 6 months now. Sometimes he will take 2 if he's had a super busy day.

It is normal to drop to one nap between 15 to 18 months. I know this from my friend who has a child development degree and from reading online articles. I would keep my baby on two naps until this age if possible.

My daughter dropped down to 1 at 14 months. My mom said I took 2 naps until almost age 2 🤷🏼‍♀️. Go with whatever works for your kid and forget about what anyone thinks.
