Junior Kindergarten

Your Junior Kindergartener will be taught by specially trained teachers using inquiry learning teaching methods. During small group instruction, teachers introduce subject matter specific content in literacy, math, science and social studies. Teachers guide students using inquiry-based learning techniques, so students not only understand the questions, but also, how they can find the answers, preparing your child for success in school. Your child will learn to use technology as a resource tool as he or she participates in problem solving activities reinforcing an understanding of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). They will be exposed to Spanish as the language is incorporated throughout the day in songs and games to train the ear and the brain for additional language learning. Service learning and social studies projects will provide your child with an understanding of his or her community that will prepare your child to negotiate larger group and class sizes later experienced in the kindergarten classroom.

Junior Kindergarten

The Junior Kindergarten program is for four- and five-year-olds who miss the September cutoff for public or private school Kindergarten and who have completed a preschool program. It prepares them for kindergarten by focusing on literacy, math, science, and social studies. Children engage with stories, letters, sounds, and words to enhance literacy, while math concepts are taught through hands-on activities. The program also develops handwriting skills with creative materials and includes technology instruction. Social skills are fostered through interactive play and activities.

Before & After School Care

Our Before And After School Program is offered at our Ashburn and Burke campuses and is open to children ages five to twelve who attend elementary schools in the vicinity of these two campuses. Afternoon snacks are provided to all children. Our program presents a variety of activities to meet the child’s needs: outdoor play, table games, cooking activities, quiet time, arts and crafts and a supervised homework period.

Infants

Our infant care program provides a nurturing atmosphere designed to meet each child’s unique needs. Each infant enrolled at Northern Virginia Academy is assigned to a primary care group which ensures the one-on-one attention and care infants need to thrive. Before & After Care

Program hours are from 7:00am - 8:00am (before care) and 3:15pm - 6:00pm (after care). The before care and extended day team is led by AppleTree teaching assistants.
