Parent Reviews
I doubt we could have found a better daycare provider for our son. Yim Fan (Lisa) is absolutely fantastic. Our son started with Yim Fan when he was 10 months old. Over the past year and a half, he's picked up a *ton* of Mandarin. (Contrary to the three-star reviewer, Yim Fan speaks to the kids in Mandarin, which is her native language; though I'm told she's fluent in Cantonese too.) Most importantly, our son *loves* Yim Fan. And it's clear she loves him too. He lights up when she's around, asks for her when she's not, and is even sad (sometimes) when it's time to go home! Yim Fan is also a baby whisperer. Our son does things for her that he (still) won't do for us---like taking off his shoes on request, or smiling after just a few seconds of tantrum. She also taught him how to drink from a regular (non-sippy) cup, without spilling; eat from a yogurt pot (again, without spilling!); and she was even the first to get him to peepee in the toilet! No surprise, the other kids' parents love Yim Fan as much as we do. In fact, there's an "Alumni Club" where all the families, past and present, get together for a picnic with Yim Fan at the park. She's also invited to all the birthdays. It's true that verbal communication with Yim Fan is sometimes challenging, if (like me) you don't speak Mandarin. But she's great with texting, using Google Translate. If you're the type who wants your provider to adhere to a strict schedule, custom activity plan, specific meal plan, et cetera, Yim Fan might not be the best fit. I admit that the language barrier and (seeming) lack of control gave us pause at first; but over the course of our relationship with Yim Fan, we've grown to trust her on just about everything. She knows what she's doing, she takes her job seriously, and she puts the kids' interests above her own. Last month, we moved away from San Francisco. It was a sad day for everyone. Yim Fan feels like part of our family. She was our son's first daycare provider, and she set the bar high. We're now looking for a daycare close to our new home. We need to lower our expectations.
Our eldest daughter has been at Suen An since she was 6MO and she is now a thriving 2.5YO headed to preschool. Lisa runs a living in-home daycare and we have come to trust her implicitly. Lisa gives the kids unending love, takes them out to a neighborhood spot everyday, teaches them many things (including Mandarin) and helps parents with things like potty training (total sainthood). Our daughter absolutely loves and adores Lisa and now her little sister is in Lisa’s care & we couldn’t be happier.
We have been (and still are) going to Suen An Childcare for 2.5 years (2 kids). It’s hard to adequately put into a review what Yim Fan (Lisa) has done for our family. She has taken all the worry and angst of leaving my kids to go to work. From day one, my kids took to her (not typical for them), and I can see how much she loves and cares for them through how they interact with her, and through “extras” she does for them (throwing amazing birthday parties, coming to their events, thoughtful gifts and snacks). I’ve never had to wonder if my kids are safe, loved, or being engaged while I’m away. She takes the kids out everyday - to the park, library rhyme time, to the wharf, Cable Car Museum, you name it. And on top of it, we get fantastic pictures and updates of our kids, and they’ve essentially become fluent in Mandarin! Major adjustments (transitioning to 1 nap, dropping bottles, potty training, new sibling) have been made simpler when guided by Lisa’s expertise and I’ve been touched by how she is always thinking of her parents. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone.
