Parent Reviews
We feel incredibly lucky to have found this school for our child – it’s not just a Montessori, it’s the OG Montessori in San Francisco, with a long-standing reputation, deeply experienced faculty, and an incredibly thoughtful, well-run program. What sets this school apart is the tenured teaching staff – many of whom have been with the school for years, even decades. Their deep expertise and calm, nurturing approach help create a focused, purposeful environment where kids thrive. The low teacher-to-student ratio means every child is truly seen, known, and supported. The classrooms are bright, clean, and inviting, filled with beautiful materials that inspire independent learning and curiosity. One of the things we’ve loved most is how students are taught to focus – really focus – whether they’re working with practical life materials or exploring early math or language. There’s a quiet hum of concentration and joy that fills the space. There’s also a thoughtful balance here – a community of families who go on to attend top-tier independent schools in San Francisco, and others who pursue the SFUSD route. It never feels competitive; instead, it feels like a supportive, respectful village where everyone wants what’s best for the children. Beyond the classroom, the extended day programs are a huge plus for working families. The Friday hot lunch tradition, catered in, is something the kids look forward to all week. And we love that they explore different parks around the neighborhood – a beautiful way to connect with the broader community and embrace the outdoors. Behind the scenes, the school is exceptionally well run. The communication from faculty and administration is consistent, clear, and transparent, and the social events for families are meaningful and fun. We've made some of our closest friends through this school – real connections that extend beyond drop-off and pick-up. If you're looking for a Montessori that’s rooted in tradition but responsive to the needs of modern families, with heart, integrity, and excellence in everything it does – this is it. We couldn’t recommend it more highly.
There are many core characteristics reflected in this school's operation: authentic Montessori approach to early childhood learning and development, highly active parent community and the deep, decades-long experience of its head teachers. For those looking for professionalism, creativity and intentionality in early childhood care and development, this school should be considered a top prospect. The extraordinarily thoughtful, student-oriented manner in which the school has navigated the pandemic--rigorous adherence to public health protocols and comprehensive communication with parents--which has created the conditions for safe re-opening and maintenance of in-person classes--is just one example of the school's dedicated and focused leadership. This is the second year our child has attended and her rapport with the teachers and other students even during pandemic times has been delightful and a relief--she loves it! That she increasingly and independently seeks out learning and knowledge in a way that reflects the Montessori nurturing of innate curiosity continually provokes our wonder and amazement. Fundamental care plus developmental encouragement--this school excels in both.
My preschooler has found his second home at MCH. He thoroughly enjoys the activities, so much so that he regularly reminds me to pick him up "as late as possible". As a parent, I was concerned about the emotional toll covid might have on him. Turns out I didn't have to worry. My son is getting the experience I had hoped for- plenty of socializing with his 'pod mates'. Couldn't be happier with our choice of program.
This is my son's second year at Montessori Children's House of the West Coast (MCH). The quality of education and community is second to none. The tenure of the staff truly speaks to how special the school is. The experience at MCH has piqued my son's curiousity while developing his attention span and focus. Leadership was able to pivot quickly during SIP to ensure a safe and enriching experience. Excellent staff, excellent program.
Don't let this modest little preschool fool you. Behind the door is a gem of a school. The head teachers have been there for over 20 years and are experts at creating a true Montessori environment and cultivating a love of learning in the children. It is rare to find such tenured faculty who even work during the summer for the summer program. My daughter is about to complete her first year there and we couldn't be more pleased. As a previous preschool teacher and Montessorian, I highly recommend MCH to anyone who is committed to the Montessori philosophy and are looking for a warm community to embrace you and your family.
